It is called the "Mecca of Indian cricket" and known for its crowd. It is the largest cricket stadium in India in terms of seating capacity with 67000 spectators possibility. Its capacity is reduced by a great margin after its renovation.Before renovation the capacity was about 100000. It is the home ground of one of the all time great players Sourav Ganguly "Dada". It is home ground for Bengal cricket team and IPL team Kolkata Knight riders. The stadium has hosted many important matches including 1996 world cup semi final which ended in dispute.This stadium was the host to 1987 world cup final held in the sub continent.
